Our Pick: Best LG Optimus 7 Deal

LG’s Optimus 7 is a smartphone to watch for. With so many features and power to boot, there is little to complain about. It may be good enough to start taking away sales from HTC and Samsung if they are not careful.

It has the appearance, at first glance, that the Optimus 7 is not quite as competitive enough as the Windows Phone 7 or WP7. LG has been known to design great-looking phones but have had some performance and other issues that kept it from rising to the top of the crowd. But, you have to look at everything this little smartphone has to offer to realise that it has a well-deserved spot at the top of these ranks.

Design Features of the LG Optimus 7

When you think of LG you do not think leader of the smartphones but the fact of the matter is they make really slick-looking devices. With the Optimus 7, LG delivers and delivers big. You will find a 3.8 inch LCD screen and other details that set it apart. There is a tapering of the ends that we found really appealing and the metal detail that was found on the cover for the battery and trim that really caught our eye. However, there was one particular aspect that made us sit up in our seats and those were the mechanical buttons that were found beneath the screen.

With the first series of Windows Phone smartphones, there was a serious and obvious lacking that was missed by many users and that was the need for mechanical buttons. Samsung, HTC and LG decided to go with touch panels instead of mechanical keys to navigate which may look better but decreases the ease and function for the user.

The Optimus 7 remedies this lack in detail and adds 3 navigational keys that can be depressed. This may not seem like a major aspect to harp about but if you have been one to close applications by accident then you will love having these navigational keys there to help you out when you need it most.

The screen features a WVGA resolution TFT display and while it is not as good as the Samsung AMOLED technology, it still does quite well and you will not be wanting when viewing your crisp and clear images filled with colour.

There is a also a 3.5 mm socket for your favourite headphones that can be found on top of the phone. It is right next to the key for the screen lock . You will also find a camera button located on the right side’s lower portion. You can remove the cover for the battery with a switch that ejects located on the backside of the phone. After ejecting, it will return to the original form laying completely flat and flush to the rest of the phone. It has seamless curves.

Because it shares a close comparison to the Windows Phone 7 devices, you can search for a more in depth review that covers all aspects of the Window Phone 7 as we will not be covering it in this review.

Key Features of the Optimus 7

The Optimus 7 has all the Microsoft required hardware. Because of this it also has its limitations. It has a large range of options for connectivity. There is HSPA network compatibility, WI-FI in addition to wireless N, A-GPS and Bluetooth which includes a suite capable of DLNA streaming. You are not able to receive, however.

Similar to the 7Q, this smartphone features two times the memory of most of its competitors. It has 16GB of storage which is not expandable. It also has a basic 5 megapixel which is standard for WP7 but its quality was surprisingly good. There is LED flash which does a commendable job of keeping dark areas lit up and it a good fill-in flash. The digital zoom option on the camera is not very useful and does not work well. Most zooms, however, are junk.

There is also the bonus of getting your hands on many of LG’s exclusive applications. These are some of the best apps we have seen from LG thus far. Some that were already pre-loaded were the panoramic photo tool and a larger than reality navigator application. This app is much like Layar. When you look at Marketplace there were about 6 more that included music games in addition to a Took Kit with even more miniature applications located inside. LG told us that they plan to continue to develop 10 additional applications each quarter and these will be exclusively for the WP7 devices.

How The Optimus 7 Performs

We love the Windows Phone and have found that the performance has been excellent on all the previous devices and our experience has been no different with the Optimus 7. When you first enter the screen, it is a seamless experience with intuitive technology taking you from place to place with ease.

The only circumstance that we felt we had to wait a bit was when the device was loading information from the internet. It was not terribly long but the only thing that we felt was worth a mention.

A full day’s use did not tire out this smartphone. This meant for us about of hour of talking each day. If you wanted to talk longer than this and increase the time you spent searching on the internet then you may need to get the device charged up.

Final Thoughts

The Optimus 7 seems to compile all of the good aspects that are found in many of the other phones in one place. It is great to look at, it feels nice and it has a lot of extra features that make it a pleasure to use. We compare many other phones and we find that the things that matter most are the little details and LG delivers on this one. It had everything we needed and much more that we were not expecting.
