The Google Nexus One: A Brief Overview

The Google Phone, also called Nexus One, is Google’s foremost smartphone which is manufactured by HTC Corporation in Taiwan. Also nicknamed HTC Passion, it has cool features such as its ability to transcribe voice to text, a microphone for dynamic noise suppression, and a voice guided turn-by-turn navigation to drivers.

Introduced by Google on January 2, 2010, the Google Phone boasts of a super fast Snapdragon CPU, powered by the latest version of Android 2.1 all encased in an ultra sleek thin body that is nothing short of handsome. Although it is HTC, the Google touch can be seen in its design, which makes it more interesting.

Google Phone: Features and Specs

The Google phone has generated a lot of excitement when Google announced its desire to enter the phone-sales market. However, with so much hype surrounding the phone, some people become apprehensive thinking whether it will really live up to its hype and expectation. Thus, the only way to know if the Google phone, or Nexus One, is really up for competition against the other smartphones in the market, such as the iPhone is to examine it piece by piece and compare it with other similar phones in the market. Below are some of the features and specs of the Google phone, so that you can decide for yourself, about the phone behind the hype.

Hardware

Smartphones are more than just the sexy design although it is part of the whole package. What is inside the hood is also important. Putting those components, such as the camera, display, industrial design, and telephony, under the microscope would give you an idea if it is really worth your money to have this latest addition to the smartphone family.

  • Camera – armed with a 5 megapixel lens and a super-speedy focus, the Google phone snaps detailed images minus the HTC-related problems from previous HTC models. The Gallery application has been updated to a more attractive and user-friendly version making photo browsing much more enjoyable and easier.
  • Display – the 3.7 inch display has a 480x800 resolution. However, the red and orange hues are somewhat oversaturated and blown-out giving the look of unbalanced colour, a typical effect with AMOLED displays. However, what it lacks in the colour department, it made up for in the touch department. The Google phone’s touch sensitivity is far better than other Android phones in the market.
  • Design – The Google phone is ultra-thin at 11.5mm with two tones which looks like two interlocking pieces – a dark gray housing wrapped by a light gray metallic band. The Google Phone, in contrast to the Droid, uses a track ball. Just above the trackball are four buttons- back, home, menu, and search - for easy navigation.
  • Internals – powered by Qualcomm, the Google phone runs on a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. Moreover, the phone has 512MB RAM and ROM and all the similar specs of other Android phones such as the light sensor, proximity sensor, and accelerometer. It also has an HSPA-capable GSM radio, Wi-Fi, and a micro SD slot which comes loaded with a 4GB card, but can be expanded to 32GB.
  • Telephony – When it comes to the sound quality of its earpiece, it also gives you a clean and clear talking experience. In terms of its 3G connections and pickup, there are places where you cannot get a signal; while faster in some places. On the whole, the Google phone has an averaged download speed of 559Kbps on the phone .

Software

After examining what is inside the Google phone, we go next to the software that makes it tick.

For starters, it has an Android 2.1 operating system which was later updated to Android Froyo 2.2. This update has allowed new cool features to be added such as a new Home screen, support for Adobe Flash 10.1, Wi-Fi tethering, a cloud to device messaging, and many more. Other cool features are as follows:

  • It has a Media Gallery developed by Cooliris, a company which specialises in web browser plug-in. The Media Gallery allows you to edit, browse, and share photos and videos easily.
  • It has non-removable third-party foistware apps which includes Amazon MP3 and Facebook.
  • Has access to 210,000 applications through Google play.
  • It runs on the Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread operating system.

The Google Phone has some cool features which you might be curious of. With its class A processor, brilliant display, and sleek design, it might be the phone you have been looking for.
