It looks like data allowances will be pretty good value for money across the board, especially with Vodafone. If you use your phone for downloading, uploading and regular surfing you’ll want plenty of inclusive data to keep your costs down.
The iPhone 5 makes it easy to monitor your usage so you can keep tabs on how you’re using your allowance, and make adjustments accordingly. The thing to remember when comparing prices is it isn’t all about price and it isn’t all about name.
Vodafone Plans
Vodafone is offering six different plans, ranging from $30 to $100 per month, plus the cost of the handset. Customers won’t have to pay upfront for the handset as the cost has been divided over 24 months, which is the minimum length of the contract and interest isn’t applicable. As is to be expected, the cost for the handset will increase for higher data storage capacity, meaning that the iPhone 5 with 64GB of storage will be more expensive than the 32GB model.
If you’re considering upgrading to Apple’s new iPhone 5 32GB model, Vodafone has some great deals available on their monthly plans.
In the past, Vodafone has had some trouble with patchy network coverage in some areas of Australia. However, they did recently announce that they plan to roll out their new super-fast 4G network at some point next year. This will be a welcome relief for many of their current customers, as well as a reassurance for new customers.
In the interim until they’re ready to go with this, Vodafone is planning to launch their new high-speed 3G+ services to help customers access faster mobile download speeds.

Vodafone Announce iPhone 5 16GB Plans
The launch of Apple’s iPhone 5 16GB model saw Vodafone inundated with pre-orders. In an effort to remain competitive with major rivals, Telstra, Optus and Virgin Mobile, the Vodafone network has released some really great plans for those customers wanting to upgrade.
It’s a good idea to keep in mind that the other three major mobile network providers will have access to 4G networks in most areas. This allows them to enjoy much faster mobile download speeds.
By comparison, Vodafone won’t roll out its super-fast 4G network until sometime through 2013. Of course, that’s not too long to wait if you can find an excellent bargain with your iPhone 5 16GB plan in the interim.
Comparing Vodafone iPhone 5 16GB Plans
| Plan Type | Monthly Plan Cost | Monthly Handset Cost | Included Value | Included Data Allowance | Total Cost over 24 months |
| Vodafone $30 | $30 | $18 | $180/month | 200MB/mth | $1,152 |
| Vodafone $40 | $40 | $14 | $300/month | 500MB/mth | $1,296 |
| Vodafone $50 | $50 | $10 | $500/month | 750MB/mth | $1,440 |
| Vodafone $60 | $60 | $6 | $700/month | 1GB/mth | $1,584 |
| Vodafone $80 | $80 | Nil | $80/month | 2GB/mth | $1,920 |
| Vodafone $100 | $100 | Nil | $100/month | 3GB/mth | $2,400 |
Vodafone’s plans aren’t always spelled out in black and white, so it’s really important to choose your plan carefully.
For example: The Vodafone $30 plan shows that you get $180 worth of included value each month, but the fine print shows that you only receive $70 worth of regular voice calls from your mobile. This means the remaining value comes from text charges and other plan inclusions that aren’t voice calls. Be careful with this if you use your mobile to make lots of calls each month.
Similarly, if you choose the Vodafone $50 plan, you have two options to choose from. While you still receive $700 worth of inclusion costs per month and 1GB data allowance a month, you also receive an infinite number of regular voice calls to any Vodafone mobiles across the country. Yet, they also offer a $50 plan that allows you to select an infinite number of SMS text messages instead. You need to specify which option suits you better in order to get the best deal possible.
Likewise, the Vodafone $80 plan seems deceptive in that you’re only given $80 worth of included value in your plan each month. At first glance, this might look low, especially when you’re offered $700 worth of included value in the $60 plan.
However, the $80 does also include an infinite number of regular voice phone calls from your mobile within Australia. Your plan also includes an infinite number of regular SMS text messages each month. These costs aren’t included in your cap limit amount, so it’s actually really good value if you tend to use your mobile a lot for calls and texts.
Vodafone Monthly Plans for iPhone 5 32GB
The plans available through Vodafone for the iPhone 5 32GB model are as follows:
| Plan Type | Monthly Plan Cost | Monthly Handset Cost | Included Value | Included Data Allowance | Total Cost over 24 months |
| Vodafone $30 | $30 | $22 | $180/month | 200MB/mth | $1,248 |
| Vodafone $40 | $40 | $18 | $300/month | 500MB/mth | $1,392 |
| Vodafone $50 | $50 | $14 | $500/month | 750MB/mth | $1,536 |
| Vodafone $60 | $60 | $10 | $700/month | 1GB/mth | $1,680 |
| Vodafone $80 | $80 | $2 | $80/month | 2GB/mth | $1,968 |
| Vodafone $100 | $100 | Nil | $100/month | 3GB/mth | $2,400 |
In the table below, you’ll be able to see the plans from Vodafone as well as the corresponding cost of the handset.
| Monthly Handset Instalments | $30 Plan | $40 Plan | $50 Plan | $60 Plan | $80 Infinite | $100 Infinite |
| iPhone 5 16GB | $18 | $14 | $10 | $6 | $0 | $0 |
| iPhone 5 32GB | $22.50 | $18.5 | $14.5 | $10.5 | $2.5 | $0 |
| iPhone 5 64GB | $27 | $23 | $19 | $15 | $7 | $0 |
As you can see, the more expensive the plan, the cheaper the device will be. Note that the handset instalments are not included in the price of the plan. In other words if you opt for an iPhone 5 32GB on a $50 plan, you will be paying $64.5 per month.
Vodafone iPhone 5 64GB Plans Comparison
The record-breaking order numbers for Apple’s newest mobile, the iPhone 5 64GB have seen Vodafone break out some highly competitive plans. This is an attempt to remain competitive against the other big mobile network providers in Australia.
Vodafone also announced that they plan to roll out their super-fast 4G network at some point throughout 2013 in an effort to keep up with Telstra, Optus and Virgin Mobile. The other three providers are already offering their customers access to their own 4G networks.
Of course, while the iPhone 5 64GB model is compatible with the faster 4G network, it is also able to revert to the 3G network no problem. Once Vodafone do launch their 4G network, customers with the newer model phones will notice the changes in download speeds right away.

Comparing the Vodafone iPhone 5 64GB Plans Properly
At first glance, many people will instantly assume that the $30 is the cheapest option for them. It shows the lowest minimum cost over the course of the 24 month plan and the lowest monthly payment amount. However, this can be deceiving if you don’t read it correctly.
If you compare the $30 with the $40 plan, you’ll see that the $40 actually turns out to be a better deal overall. This is because the fine print will show you that the Vodafone $30 plan may include $180 worth of total inclusions, but it only offers you $70 worth of call costs each month.
By comparison, the $40 gives you access to an unlimited number of calls to other Vodafone mobiles each month, along with a full $300 worth of inclusion costs each month.
Add the monthly handset payment to this figure and you’re getting a much better deal for just $4 per month more.
If you tend to use your mobile phone a lot, the $60 plan offers excellent value. Not only do you receive $700 each month in plan inclusion costs, but you also benefit from an infinite number of calls to Vodafone mobiles within Australia per month and an infinite number of regular text messages each month. On top of this, you’ll receive a 1GB data allowance, so if you tend to use your mobile to check email or access the Internet, this is very handy.
Vodafone Officially release plan details: comprehensive look on What’s Included
The plans from Vodafone are quite generous, with the $60 plan with a 16GB iPhone 5 being touted as the best value for money. Thus, on the $60 plan customers get $700 included value, a data allowance of 1GB, unlimited calls to Vodafone mobile numbers and unlimited texts. Additionally, the iPhone 5 will cost only $6 per month.
Considering that the flagfall for a call is $0.4 and the cost per minute is $0.98, an average 2 minute call will cost $2.36. This means that you get an additional 590 minutes of calls included besides the unlimited calls you can place to Vodafone numbers.
| Monthly Handset Instalments | $30 Plan | $40 Plan | $50 Plan | $60 Plan | $80 Infinite | $100 Infinite |
| Included Value | $180 | $300 | $500 | $700 | $80 | $100 |
| Avg Cost Per 2 Min Call | $2.36 | $2.36 | $2.36 | $2.36 | $2.36 | $2.36 |
| Total Minutes Included | 150 | 250 | 420 | 590 | Infinite | Infinite |
| Data | 200 MB | 500 MB | 750 MB | 1 GB | 2 GB | 3 GB |
| Texts | $0.3 / text | $0.3 / text | $0.3 / text | $0.0 / text | $0.0 / text | $0.0 / text |
| Other Inclusions | Additional $70 Vodafone to Vodafone calls | Infinite Vodafone to Vodafone calls OR Infinite texts | Infinite Vodafone to Vodafone calls OR Infinite texts | Infinite Vodafone to Vodafone calls AND Infinite texts | Infinite calls within Australia AND Infinite Texts | Infinite calls within Australia AND Infinite Texts AND Infinite Voicemails and 13 & 18 calls |
As the table above shows, all Vodafone plans offer excellent value for money and if you spend a lot of time talking on the phone and are constantly running up huge phone bills then you can’t go wrong with the $80 Infinite or the $100 infinite plans. You can talk as much as you like without ever having to worry about going over the included value since you get an infinite number of calls every month. Add to that the fact that you can get the 16GB iPhone 5 for free on the $80 plan or any one of the versions for free on the $100 plan and you will realise that these really are amazing plans.
